Repair Café Sandbach are seeking volunteer fixers to support their efforts to reduce the number of items going to landfill and to save people money. You don’t need to be a professional fixer to get involved; all you need is to be confident, competent and happy to give your time to make a positive difference to the environment, and to your local community.
Venues are currently being sourced for Repair Café Sandbach events and are aimed to take place on the morning of the third Saturday of each month at rotating venues across the town.
People visiting the Repair Café can bring along their broken items, including toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys and crockery. Anything broken (other than microwaves or white goods) is welcome, and a group of volunteer repair experts are available to help make repairs, free of charge. Repair Café Sandbach are particularly seeking volunteer fixers with skills in the following areas: electrical, sewing/textiles, bikes, IT/computers, woodwork but other more bespoke skills, such as jewellery, are also most welcome.
Repair Café Sandbach are also looking for volunteer hosts to welcome visitors to the Repair Café and to help with serving refreshments. If you are friendly and love being part of a feel-good atmosphere, why not get involved?
By promoting repairs, Repair Café Sandbach wants to help reduce waste going to landfill.
Project lead, Helen Dorney, said
“Every year, we throw away huge amounts in Sandbach, even items which have very little wrong with them, and which could easily be used again after a simple repair. Many people don’t feel confident to repair things themselves and sometimes we forget that we can have things repaired, instead of using up valuable resources by buying new items. As well as being better for the environment, our Repair Café aims to save people money, share precious repair skills that are being lost, and bring the local community together at a low-key, enjoyable event.”
Repair Café Sandbach are being supported by Repair Café Wales, which has established a network of volunteer-led Repair Cafes across Wales around the values of waste reduction, community cohesion and skill-sharing.
